Nestled between the train tracks and a shanty town five hours from Chennai is Pereira’s English Medium School. For half a century the school has given children aged three to 15 the chance to defy the odds and make something of themselves through education. It’s a chance most Indian kids can only dream of.
But even life at school can be tough. Many families can’t afford to send their kids to class with proper uniforms, shoes or even lunch. Summers are hot here – 40ºC for days on end – and electricity is often shut off by the local power station. Back in the classroom teachers juggle two classes at once, rushing between rooms to teach as many children as possible.
Recently one of our founding members went to India where he saw first hand what these kids have to go through, and how much they want to learn. We’ve decided to do our bit by personally sponsoring students to attend the school. But you can help too: we’ve created an Indian-inspired pizza called the Holi Cow. Every time you purchase this particular pie with Indian-spiced chat potatoes, green peas, mozzarella, paneer, chilli capsicum salsa and raita, Shawcross will donate $2 to the school on your behalf. With enough support they’ll be able to pay for another teacher’s salary, dish out a free education to local village children and install solar panels to power the school in the scorching summers.
